After classical studies at the Conservatoire of Montpellier and a Master at the Paul Valery University, Julien Guillamat discovers the composition at the University of Birmingham where he obtained a PhD in electroacoustic composition under the direction of Prof. Jonty Harrison. He composes acousmatic and mixed music influenced by the French musical tradition. He worked with the Wales National Opera, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Opera-Orchestre National de Montpellier, etc.
As a performer, Julien spatializes a wide repertoire throughout Europe on the acousmonia of Musiques & Recherches, KLANG! acousmonium or BEAST and obtains a 1st prize of acousmatic interpretation at L’Espace du Son (Brussels). He has participated in numerous festivals and
international conferences: NIME 2011 (Oslo) LaptopMusician (Venice), SoundAround (Copenhagen), Inventionen (Berlin), RedSonic (London).
After being selected composer at the 2012 Academy (IRCAM, Paris), he returned to France and founded KLANG! acousmonium. He became director of the maison des arts sonores and creates KLANG! electroacoustic music festival.
Julien taught composition, musicology and interpretation (electroacoustic music) at the University of Birmingham and now at ESSCA (Angers & Paris) and the Royal Conservatoire of Mons. It has received commissions from Circles of Influence, National Education, the Wellcome Trust, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts… Julien is a member of the ensembles Déviation(s) and ELEM.
